Exam 2011 with other things

Exam week is over! Managed to work for over 30 hours straight the last days, which was poor planning on my part. We were given a base model and rig of a chameleon and two photos of backgrounds we could choose from. We were supposed to either focus on the environment or the character. I chose the character, and remodeled a bit, sculpted a lot and made textures, specular and gloss maps. But here are the results (you can click the images for their full resolution):

So now that that's done I can relax and enjoy the last two weeks of school. I also have a picture from the digital painting week:

Well, that's the end of this blog post then. This semester has been very productive. The only thing left to show is the commercial project, but we don't have permission to post it yet. I will post it as soon as I have we are allowed.

DADIU production

I've been working on a game for the DADIU production in Copenhagen for a few weeks now, and here is a link to the teaser: Raasool Teaser

I created all the models in the teaser (the Raasool logo in the end included) and made the composition using Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro CS5. I'll be uploading some images of the models I've been making soon-ish.

Self Study weeks

So it's self study! I still haven't finished the textures on the Project Q creature, but I will...next week. I'm really slow in the texturing department.

But these self-study weeks I've been working on modeling a head. Here are a couple of WIP's of it, the last one is the latest one:

I'll be fiddling with this today and then tomorrow I'll start making some digital paintings. I've got to finish at least one painting for friday, and have this head here pretty much ready for sculpting/texturing. But I'm excited and having fun building it! :)

Here is some more progress images from Project Q. We started texturing week this monday and we've been sculpting and texturing in Mudbox as we go. Armando (our teacher) helped me realize the muscle mass of this beast and it's coming along nicely. Next week is rigging!

Worked a lot on the machine. Having some issues trying to build that middle part. It's difficult to visualize, since I'm really inexperienced in drawing/building any kind of machine. But it's great practice!

So, we've started doing the Project Q models now. We're being guided by the amazing Armando Sepulveda del Toro (website) and I've created a pretty detailed model of my creature, and a very basic blockout of the mechanical part of it. But here it is so far!

And another blog post it is! Well, I have something new to show now, as we've just ended our first week on Project Q (Project Quaruped) where we are supposed to design and build (and rig) a creature. I am in a group with Carmen Hannibal [Blog] and Glenn August [Blog] from the Character Animation class, and we managed to dig through our minds for an awesome design. Here are some sketches and initial ideas, and then a character sheet, which is as good as finished, but I'll be fiddling (pixelfucking) with it a bit anyway.

These were some of the initial silhouettes and thumbs I made.

At this point we'd found a general direction we wanted to go in and took it from there.

And here is the character sheet. Carmen did the color and Glenn made that awesome machine. It was great teamwork through this week, and I really think we managed our time rather admirably. I think this design would never have made it to this level without Carmen and Glenn! Awesome work you guys!

Well, I'm not really inclined to write much here. Just wanted to dump some stuff, for instance some sketches I made in a class with Glenn Vilppu and some character designs I made for the current project.

These are some of the character designs for Norma Desmond, a character for a trailer project that will be going on this entire semester. Norma Desmond is from the movie Sunset Boulevard (1950) and our trailer is centered around that movie.

But I guess you've got to take a break sometimes. I know I need it.

But here are some images from the past few weeks, this semester has been amazing and I'm sure next year will be even better. Ahhh look at me, getting all excited for the next semester already!

We did some rigging and animation with André Bergs after the whole presentation thing, but pictures of that would be boring. So instead, an image from the matte painting week we had with Daniel Cacouault and Paolo de Lucia:

After that we had some concept developement with Peter Chan (the original!), and that was pretty amazing. He was absolutely amazing, really an inspirational guy with an undying passion for his work.

We also had our exam last week! That was some experience, I think all exams should be like that. I've actually never had fun during an exam. I've always thought exams should be unreasonably complicated with unreasonable rules, but this exam proved me wrong! We were given a picture, and we had to make a turnaround and 3D model of the head of the character we chose. Here is my turnaround and a hipoly mesh (sculpted in Mudbox) of my model:

I've planned to try to keep posting images onto this blog this summer. We have summer homework anyway (well, I guess you could call it that) and it might be interesting to show sketches from here an there, as I'll be in Iceland the entire summer vacation. It'll be fun!

Unna the Sun Seraph

Yessss it's been a while! I'm a bad blogger, I know :( But I hope this post will be somewhat enjoyable. This post is dedicated to the last project, the character design and character modelling project that's been going on for the last weeks. It was over on Friday last week, where we gave a neat presentation. I felt that I could do better on my presentation, so I'm going to show that last, but also putting up a simple turnaround of the character model and images of the concept work I did, and my maquette. So here I go.

Here is some of the concept work I did. The story is that Unna used to be a high priestess of the sun. When the gods left the world she became desperate and performed a transformation ritual to ensure her and her fellow priests eternal life so that they could wait for the return of the gods, and they were all transformed into glorious, golden creatures with feathered wings. But as centuries passed, their transformations continued, until they were only a shadow of what they once were, their humanity lost. They didn't realize that they hadn't been blessed, but cursed, and they slowly succumbed to insanity.

There are a few things that I would have liked to spend more time on, for instance, she is supposed to have fur on her upper body. But getting Maya to comply was more difficult than I anticipated, so I had to abandon that for the time being. I'll most likely be returning to the model to check that out. I also would have liked to make the presentation with a displacement map (sorry to those reading this who don't know what that is), but I highly underestimated the time needed and had many annoying errors when trying to render it out. Again, I will have to return to it when I go back to the model in my free time and make the fur.

I learned an enormous amount during this project. And it's all thanks to the teachers: Craig Kellman, Damon Bard, Adam Dewhirst and Anna Kubik. Thanks you all! :)

Character Design project

We've been working on character designs, character personality and silhouettes this week with Craig Kellman. He's an incredible designer and really taught me the importance of silhouettes.

But this is the lineart of my character design. I call her Unna, Seraph of the Sun.

Her story is that she used to be the high priestess of the Sun Goddess and her two children (the moons), but the gods left the world. She and her fellow priests then performed a ritual to ensure them eternal life, so that they could wait for the gods to return and be taken to the Sun. They turned to glorious creatures with golden feathered wings, but centuries passed and the gods didn't return. They started to forget why they performed the ritual, and started to gradually lose their humanity as their temples crumbled with age and nature started to creep over them. Tall trees grew around the temples so the Seraphs lost their abilty to fly, and their feathers fell off and their wings shriveled. Soon they were only a shadow of what they once were, scavengers and carnivores praying on farmers in the neighbouring lands, and challenging any who dared enter the forests around their temples.

I thought of it as a computer game character instead of an animation character. I'm much more drawn towards computer games than films, so I wanted this character to reflect that in some way. I also made this one in a very realistic style and I will be modelling it with that in mind. I want to challenge myself as I've modelled pretty cartoony stuff in the past, but I'm aiming for a much more realistic style. I'll be posting a full model sheet when that's finished, but for now only a line drawing :)

Timelapse Project

Finally, in the end of the last week of the timelapse project, I managed to put together a decent render of my room that I showed last time. It's still spotty, as I had some photon problems (could have fixed it, but would have added too much time to my render, and it was already waaaaay too long). Started the render on a Friday and it finished on a Thursday :) But here it is!

Some obvious changes were made, with the glass wall for instance. Some smaller additions were also made, textures refined, UV maps made and fixed those that needed it. Overall I'm pretty happy! I give my thanks to my teacher Oliver, for being incredibly patient and helpful through the entire process.

So I'm currently on the second week of three in a project where we have to decorate a room and create a day-to-night timelapse. It's a great project and I really enjoy it. It's a texture and light project so we were allowed to download models online to decorate it as we wanted it. I found models on archibase.net, turbosquid.com and evermotion.org. Here is the first render in the first week, still working on UV maps and texturing, and fixing the lighting. It's supposed to have a photorealistic look.

Layout week

In the fourth week of this semester we had Layout lessons. We had to think about camera positioning etc. and worked from storyboards. My favorite from this week is when we had to make the layout for a Bonnie and Clyde scene after the car has been shot. Here is my image:

After architecture week we had colors with Lawrence. It was a tough week, but I was surprised how much knowledge could be crammed into my brain in just a week.

We made color thumbnails and a small acrylic painting. Here is the painting I made, with the story "little red riding hood".

Architecture week

The architect Guillermo Yanguez came for two weeks and our class was split up, one part went for architecture in the second week of this semester and the other went to color class with Lawrence. Then it was switched around for the third week.

We were split into groups and analyzed a painting by Edward Hopper, and my group chose "Morning Sun". The final project was to make an extension of the space in the painting. I decided to enter the mindspace of the woman.

So, in the first week of this semester, we had value classes with Lawrence. We studied how to render out values with pencil. Here is a picture of one of the assignments; "monster in Rome":

It was an extremely valuable lesson.

So finally the end of a 7 week project! It was an incredible learning experience, and one of the most fun and challenging projects I've done! So here are the results :)

And this happens to be the end of a great semester as well :) Tomorrow is final presentation and then poof! A whole semester gone by in a second. I'll be glad for a bit of a rest though, even though I'll miss not having to be in school 12+ hours a day ;) Being busy doing the things you love is never boring!

Here are some pieces from design week with Lawrence. We had certain restrictions on each project that week and had to work based on taste twice, music once and feeling. All had to be abstract, and we were working with lines, shapes and values.

We had concept design in the week after and had to create a character and environment for that character. The theme was circus freak sideshow, and the style was to be similar to vinyl toys. This is an ongoing project.
